Glad you have found a solution that works for you. 
Did you recompile the entire Abiword ? Or just some library ?
I must admit that I do not understand your modification in depth.

Which Linux distro are you using ?
I suppose that replacing the Symbol font should have worked for you too 
(without modification of some source code), but since you are not on Ubuntu, 
I have no idea where you could get the adequate font and how to replace it
or how to remove the faulty replacement font.
