In my experience (mostly not with abiword), when a square is displayed (or printed) instead of a character, it is because the font does not include that character. For example, it often happens for me with characters outside the 128 ASCII characters, or when a document contains UTF-8 encoded characters, and the font cannot handle beyond the 128 ASCII characters or UTF-8 characters. Sorry for the top posting--it just seemed like it should be pretty clear this way.
