You might want to check-up with one of the vim/ed/ex/sed line editors mailing 
list or freenode IRC.  My guess; vim, sed or awk might prove worthy.  Arnold 
Robbins wrote and maintain several books on vim & awk (incl sed) and would 
likely have the *best* answer for this question.

Check the Freenod awk channel is probably where you'll find all the hard-core 
line editor users with knowledge from the rest of the line editors.

This question/answer should likely also be posted on a Wiki page somewhere (for 
historical purposes) before the mode disappears.
