We do call gtk_show_uri() on gtk > 2.14.

If you don't run at least Gtk 2.14 (and are not on Maemo) then there is
nothing much worth doing.

You patch is broken because it wants people to have gnome-vfs (which I
shall remind is deprecated for a very long time) to deal with
gtk_show_uri(). This is just wrong.

And yes we have fallback. I'm ok to add "xdg-open" as the first command
to try.
