If it ties your panties up this much, just use VI/VIM/GVIM! Matter of fact, I do just this and save everything important as text. Saving important stuff in other formats seems cumbersome as everybody uses something different. Can't go wrong with ascii/text if you don't want to waste time keeping up with trends!
