If it ties your panties up this much, just use VI/VIM/GVIM!  Matter of fact, I 
do just this and save everything important as text.  Saving important stuff in 
other formats seems cumbersome as everybody uses something different.  Can't go 
wrong with ascii/text if you don't want to waste time keeping up with trends!


As for the b/g and f/g color in Abiword, I think something like changing the 
colors can be restricted to the "Normal Layout" (ie. black b/g and white f/g), 
while "Print Preview Layout" will revert to normal colors shown when printing
(ie.  white b/g and black f/g).
