Newbie help on formatting / styles

Hello Abiword-user

AbiWord seems better than MSWord in allowing local formating, not just thru styles
and elaborate menus. However,

1. I want font to stay fixed until I DECIDE to change it. Now, if I highlight some
text, use box left of font selector to change from normal to block to list, etc.,
then back, TimesNewRoman has been shoved down my throat. I DESPISE IT.
And PlainText is always Courier New.

2. Font pull-down menu does not recognize font name, which makes #1 SLOW to fix.
(OpenOffice takes 'ar' as 'arial', etc.)

3. How might I specify my own default settings, global and in-file?
I want block text, chapter and section headings, and so forth.

I appreciate the Programmers' efforts.
