Good to know that "normal.awt" works.

There won't be a Help entry for "user-specific." That's only a
reference to settings that affect only the defaults you set up for
Abiword in your Home directory (in Linux). Instead of modifying the
Abiword file in /usr/share (or wherever it is in Windows), you can
create a new user-profile file in your own Home directory for instances
of Abiword that you invoke for yourself (vs. any other users of your
system).

This option is discussed in the Help file. If you're running Abiword
with an internet connection, click the Help button, then "Help
Contents" (which will open your browser and take you to the Abiword
Help page). From there click on "How To," and the first item  you'll
see is "How to change your default styles and documents." That will
explain the different ways to alter the default settings (maybe more
complicated than other word processors, but there's a reason...). Also
the difference between system-wide and user-specific settings.

I believe Abiword saves ".doc" files as a kind of ".rtf" file. You
might want to experiment with other forms of Open Document Format
(which a lot of users seem to be shifting to now).
