Re: .wps files?

If I recall, .wps is a "Microsoft Works" file type. I don't think
"Works" has been maintained for a long time. When I was teaching I
routinely received documents from students in .wps (because "Works" was
often bought for students as a cheaper alternative to Word/Office).
Those files often gave me trouble and would open with weird
formatting--not just with Abiword, but with regular versions of Word as
well. . 

At that time, Abiword handled conversion plug-ins differently. So the
answer was making sure that the correct plug-in was installed. The
current Abiword seems to handle that a lot more seamlessly. So the .wps
may open normally. But don't be discouraged if it doesn't. Perhaps you
can try altering the file type designation, with various versions
of the .doc format.
