Validation Alert: The attribute bxe_xpath is not allowed in div

I'm attempting to use an XSLT template as opposed to index.htm to create the BXE browser page. The reason: I have to use a Cocoon framework developed by my research group. The resulting XHTML page contains the following snippet for the BXE editor:

 <div bxe_xpath="/xhtml:homepage/xhtml:body" id="bxe_content"/>

The content.xml file is inserted into the webpage (onload) and the editor works okay, except I get the following validation error: 

The attribute bxe_xpath is not allowed in div

When I make the first edit BXE asks if I desire to delete the bxe_path attribute. Answering yes deletes the horizontal line at the top of the editing area but from that point on everything works fine.

Are there any suggestions for fixing this?
