 From the Makefile, they are placed in po by merging the intltool cache 
and the po files. Something should go wrong here. Or maybe it's just me 
that do not run the correct tool when making the tarball (i.e. I cannot 
use the scripts in the tree, I should make my own).

Do you observe the same behaviour?

This is clear, it effectively selects the wrong one.
