Search Engine Optimization and Marketing Tips from EzRankings.com

This is the fifth of a six-part series of lessons on search
engine optimization. Each lesson will contain tips and information on how to
improve your site’s search engine placement. Today’s lesson is on:

Common SEO Mistakes To Avoid

There are many common mistakes in search
engine optimization that both novices, and the “more experienced” make. Often
these mistakes are based on believing a person can “fool the search engines”
and increase their site’s rankings using trickery. But these methods often
backfire as search engines have become more sophisticated, and their methods of
sleuthing out deceptive practices has improved.

Mistake Number One: Spamming Search Engines

Sometimes people will receive outdated
advice, from well-meaning friends, suggesting that hiding keywords in a
background of the same color, or using keywords over and over in the tags and
text, or even submitting their site URL weekly will help their site’s rankings.
The reality is that this will get a site BANNED from Google and other major
search engines, and a site on the rise (or already established) can fall to the
bottom.

Tactics such as these are considered “spamming” and should
be avoided. At EzRankings , we always counsel our
clients on the best timing for search engine submission (and how to do it) as
well as the difference between legitimate and non-legitimate use of keywords.
It’s much easier to prevent problems this way, and we have helped many clients
reach rankings-and we never spam.

Mistake Number Two: assuming the search engine can “see” your graphics or
frames.

Search engine spiders do quite well at
crawling links, and at reading basic text, but they can’t tell what words are
being used on your graphics, or read “frames”. This is why using “ALT” tags,
naming your graphics appropriately, and using other text optimization techniques
are vital.

When you use “ALT” tags, you are giving
the crawlers text that they can then index, and use to find keywords for your
site. And never, ever just make the text on your pages one big graphic. This
will cause your site to drop in rank, and makes it easy for search engines to
‘pass over’ your site. Text is still king with the bots and crawlers, and your search engine optimizing specialist can help you use text to the best advantage on your
site.

Search engines also have great difficult with digesting
dynamic scripts, such as CGI or PERL functions. In these cases, try creating a
static page as well, for indexing purposes.

Mistake Number Three

Finally, there is one common mistake that
beginners make: trying to do it themselves.

At times, people ask us, “couldn’t I do my
search engine optimization myself? And save myself some money?” While the
person who isn’t an expert at SEO can try their hand at it, it’s really better
to enlist the aid of an expert. Search engine optimization is actually a
fulltime job, and most people don’t have the time (or technical knowledge) to
keep up with the ever-changing intricacies of optimization, or to monitor the
changes on search engines and their requirements.

These lessons may make it “look easy” but in reality, it
isn’t, but we’ve only discussed the basics here. Any business serious about
improving its site rankings, or improving their traffic, should consider going
to a firm that specializes in SEO , and that understands fully the best methods of
optimization for their industry. They’ll enjoy better results, and increased
income if they depend on site traffic for earnings.
