In the long-term, the problem is that we need a genuinely "Universal" URI that works across Gnome, KDE, libxml2, Mozilla, etc etc. My current plan is to use libgsf to wrap a GnomeVFS URI into a form that libxml2 can work with. This is used by Gnumeric and should be well supported.
