After discussing this with many developers and users, we have come to
a concensus.

As of Jedit 4.3pre6, support for Java 1.4 will be dropped. All future
versions of jEdit 4.3 must run on a JDK 1.5 implementation (or later).

This means now we (developers) can use the java.util.concurrent
package, the new collections, and the latest XML apis we want.

This will make it a lot easier to remove old code and workarounds from
jedit's core. I predict the quality of the software will greatly
improve as a result of this decision.

If you still want/need to run Java 1.4, that's what Jedit 4.2 is for.
it's a stable release for a widely used version of java, that still
works great with a lot of plugins. If you want to be up to date on the
latest and greatest, you probably already have java 1.5 anyway.
