jedit 5.6.0, kubuntu linux 23.04, openjdk 19
ancestor 1.2.0 (now deactivated, which makes the problem go away)
buffertabs 1.2.4
Reproduce by invoking a shortcut that is mapped to builtin command Go To
Next Buffer / Go To Previous Buffer (Ctrl+pgup or Ctrl+pgdn in my mapping).
