Another option:

insertSpaces(numberOfSpaces)
{
  caretPosition = textArea.getCaretPosition();
  for (i = 0; i < numberOfSpaces; i++)
  {
    buffer.insert(caretPosition, " ");
  }
}


I can't seem to reproduce your original problem, so I don't have any advice
there.
