Since *both* are said to be the case--some of us can use sftp from the jEdit plugin with our servers, while the OP says he can get to his server from the cmd line but not from jEdit--we have a mysterification. Hence my idea of setting up a test account on the server that the OP says is a problem, so we can try it out and possibly narrow down the problem.
