Questions about 'Monospaced' font Win/Mac/Linux

Hi,

Thanks for jEdit. I've been using it since 2011. I've been using it as 
part of the Isabelle proof assistant. There's Eclipse, Atom.io, and VS 
Code, but in spite of choices, I'm still making new plans based on jEdit.

This email is about the 'Monospaced' font that's available in jEdit on 
Windows 10. Fonts are mostly a mystery to me, but I do know that when it 
comes to fonts, nothing much can be assumed about how they will work OS 
to OS, and program to program.

To make sure you know exactly what font I'm talking about, I attach an 
image of 'Dingbats'. I used the 'Character Map' plugin to get that, a 
great plugin indeed.

I explain my interest in 'Monospaced', pose 3 sets of questions about 
it, and end with some comments.

**INTEREST**

'Monospaced' is monospaced, which is very important, and it has many 
more UTF-8 symbols that show up in 'Character Map', than other fonts. 
Other fonts may look better in jEdit, but true font beauty only comes 
with LaTeX anyway.

*QUESTIONS 1**

What is this 'Monospaced' font? Where does it come from? Is it internal 
to jEdit? Is it this font:

**QUESTIONS 2**

Will 'Monospaced' show up in Mac jEdit and Linux jEdit, with the same 
exact symbols, mapped to the same Unicode hex values?

**QUESTIONS 3**

At a minimum, I need to guarantee that it's a permanent part of Windows 
jEdit. Is 'Monospaced' fixed for Windows, for all time? Will it ever go 
away?

I specifically want the graphic symbols of 'Monospaced', so I can do 
something similar to how Isabelle/jEdit uses graphical symbols.

I need it all to be fixed, for years to come, at least on Windows. Using 
Unicode to do graphics is a big workaround. I can spend hours, days, and 
years experimenting with symbols to try and get something that I think 
looks okay.

I say again, here, how I'm using jEdit in spite of newer editors being 
available. It's because it's simple but sophisticated, can be made to be 
portable, doesn't require "always connected, magic net dependence", and 
doesn't take up more than abut 240MB (with plugins and the JRE Java 9).
