jedit.exe can't find JRE

Dear list members,
I installed the latest jEdit on Windows 10. When trying to start jedit.exe from the desktop shortcut created by the installer, I get an error message saying that a JRE 11 or greater is required. This is strange, because I do have OpenJDK on my system, and the path environment variable contains the bin folder bin forder of the JRE. I did use exactly that version of the OpenJDK pointed at by the web page opening immediately after receiving the error message.
Of course I can start the program by a command like "java -jar jedit.jar", but I do wonder how to start the exe.

Thank you so much in advance for any help on this,
with kind regards,
Bernhard Stoeger from Austria
