Michael,

I know this doesn't answer your specific question, I'm just a user and I 
have no idea about the key.

For what it's worth, jEdit installed on Ubuntu with the following

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y default-jdk
sudo apt-get install -y jedit

it can also be built it from source pretty easily by a beginner with 
IntelliJ
