Java 17 does not run jEdit

I installed jEdit 5.6 on a x64 Win8.1 system. I get an error that a JRE of
11 is required. I have Microsoft's build of OpenJDK 17.0.3 which should
more than fulfill the requirement. Is it possible to get jEdit to run?
