I am using Kubuntu 24.04.03 LTS.
For keys not working, try Utilities-Troubleshooting-Keyboard Tester and see
if those keys register at all. If they don't, it is probably something in
the OS that is interfering.
I am not too familiar with gnome so I can't help you but in KDE there are
sometimes some keyboard "helper" apps that run in the background and remap
keys and capture them before regular desktop apps can see them.

In any case, I recommend downloading and installing jEdit 5.7.0 from the
website. It is newer and has important bug fixes.
