There isn't a setting for it, but here is one way to add that space. In
jEdit, use the Utilities menu: Utilities -> Settings Directory ->
properties. This will open your properties file for editing. Find
"view.gutter.borderWidth" and change that value to what you find
appropriate, probably 2 or 3. Save the change, restart jEdit. The default
for that value is 0 in case you want to change it back later.
