Thanks, Jürgen, thanks to your message it was easy to figure out the
problem.

If anyone is curious: I installed a template needed to run some of tests
(http://www.aeaweb.org/templates/latex_templates.zip) and it bundles an
old (20 years old!) multicol.sty, and that version was found first.

It's my fault for not checking that since I've had this problem multiple
times in the past. Sigh.
