The reasons for the changes, if my memory serves me well, was due to the different trade-offs in terms of compression/decompression and respective parallelization. None of this is of much interest for us. xz is well supported across diverse architectures and provides good compression levels without incurring into a huge cost for decompression and so it is a good choice.
