This is natural if either the class file is not for Japanese or babel or polyglossia is not used. pLaTeX doesn’t do translation of titles.

I’m not very familiar with the situation but it doesn’t seem XeTeX and LuaTeX have Japanese breaking rule by their own. What people do with these LaTeX variants is to use packages that complement those shortcomings such as zxjatype for XeTeX and luatexja for LuaTeX.

Some LaTeX classes (e.g. bxjsarticle and ltjarticle) internalise similar features as those packages.

I’m rather amazed by the fact that polyglossia does the breaking job of Japanese text.

Yes, definitely! Those weird breakings don’t occur with Japanese layouts (note that ja/Intro uses the English article) and they can be overcome in other classes using zxjatype and luatexja packages.

I tested with bxjsarticle.cls (Japanese Article BX Series) for XeTeX and jlreq.cls (Japanese Article JlReq Class) and ltjarticle (Japanese Article for LuaTeX) for LuaTeX. Fonts are set to defaults and they work fine. In XeTeX case, “Predefined:” needs to be checked in Class Option of "Document Settings -> Document Class”, otherwise font errors can occur.

Thanks for your great work!
