Introduction to LYX - suggested revision

Dear LYX Documentation team,

 

I attach a suggested rewrite of chapter 1, The Philosophy of LYX, which is a
part of the Introduction to LYX document. I have rewritten it because I
believe it does not properly present the arguments for and against the use
of LYX or its modern alternatives.

 

I believe its case against word processors is out of touch with modern
reality; and its case for LYX does not present its advantages correctly.

 

I am but an occasional user of LYX. I am a retired programmer who is now
involved with various voluntary groups, and the associated documents and
spreadsheets. I have used both the Windows and Linux versions of LYX. On my
'main computer' I use Windows and Microsoft Office; on my other computers I
use what came with them or what is cost-free - usually Libre Office.

 

I have copied your first paragraph in section 1.1, but used the Standard
English 'mother' rather than the US vernacular 'mom'. LYX is a product for
many nations, so Standard English is preferred for the English version. The
other sections and paragraphs are my own.
