What do you mean?
I disagree

In preview mode (and in the lyx file)
\[
\frac{\Gamma_{ul}^{2}+\Delta_{ul}^{2}}{2\Gamma_{ul}}
\]
and in preview search
$\Delta_{ul}$

Thus, I anticipate that \Delta_{ul} will be changed by \delta_{ul}

Usually I do it manually. Note that lyx inserted \Delta_{ul}^{2}
