Thinking more about it I concluded that this patch makes sense anyway,
and it will definitely have an impact in the case in point (though I
don't know whether it fixes what you call a "memory leak").

So I committed an enhanced version of it at 9b57990e43

This is candidate for 2.5.x and 2.4.x.
