--guidestripe option not working

Hello,

I love using nano to write code in Python, but one thing that would be 
nice is to see quickly what column I am in. I looks like in the manual 
that this is possible with the --guidestripe option, but it does not 
look like that option is functional? Please advise, and, thanks!
