JFYI, if I run

peter@raven:~> strace nedit 

nedit did *not* crash.
Using the Preferences -> Save default pops-up the message about the
resource file and File -> Save as pops-up the internal file browser.

Both I've not seen before. 

May be this can give anybody else a hint to find the root cause.
