If you have made no changes to the language mode settings, there are default values built into the executable. Typically the file will either be $HOME/.nedit for older versions, or $HOME/.nedit/nedit.rc for newer ones (at least on unix-like systems). Try the menu Preferences->Save Defaults... - this displays a confirmation dialog to update the file, saying exactly where it is.
