That is highly possible, the regular MinGW doesn't come with 
automake/autoconf. I installed msysDTK and added the latest autoconf, 
but I got stopped by this error. Are these macros defined somewhere in 
somefile that I may be missing?

Nope, doesn't help. Here are the versions I have:

automake (GNU): 1.7.1
aclocal (GNU): 1.7.1
autoconf (GNU): 2.59

And I can't even import the old Makefile.in and configure scripts from 
the 1.3.1 source distribution, the repository has changed too much.
