No wonder I misunderstood you, see the subject of this thread and what 
you wrote in your first mail:

I must admit I'm lost.

Either single makefile with everything, or main makefile with 
submakefiles in subdirectories called through <subproject>.

Indeed, sorry about that. I only looked at autoconf format output 
(which does the right thing) and assumed it was handled generically 
in makefile.bkl. I'll fix it for the next release.
