[poedit-users] Original strings other than english

I want to translate a software GUI whose original strings are not english, 
but german. I found a hint in a previous message:

I found that if I set the catalog language to English, the TM does not 
work. If I leave it blank, I have to choose a translation language when 
clicking on the original string. I can then choose 'en' and TM works.

Is this the recommended way to do it or does anybody know a better 
strategy?

Perhaps just define the target language as some other code and use it as 
if it were english?
