I have checked the resulting po file in a text editor - the obsolete 
strings are definitely not there anymore. I have then tried msgmerge on 
a Linux machine and this keeps the obsolete strings in the 
pseudo-comment format you mention. At the moment I can't test on another 
machine so I don't know whether this is a problem with my installation 
or a general Windows problem.

Closely related to this - as the obsolete strings are commented out they 
are not part of the mo file that is created by poedit. Is there a way to
make these strings 'unobsolete' (apart from editing the text file 
directly) so that they are included in the mo file?
