Most things can be made an option, but does it make sense, especially 
here? I think it doesn't, using background coloring has fundamental 
problems (see my earlier posts).

The problem with making anything [that doesn't need to be] 
configurable is that it doubles+ the number of possible 
configurations and the more there are, the harder it is to test 
everything, the easier it is to introduce new bugs and the harder it 
is to handle bugs (because many of them will demonstrate themselves 
in only some of the many different configurations).
