TranslationMemory usage question

Hi!

I just downloaded poedit 1.1.9 and am new to poedit and the use of
*.po-files.
It looks from the documentation that TranslationMemory is a very usefull
feature so I am trying to figure out how to use it for my project.
I am working with the translation of OpenOffice to Norwegian. The project
filres are retrieved from a CVS repository with the following po-related
structure:

openoffice
  po
    database
      *.po
    templates
      tips
        *.pot

The po files are generated from html-dictionary files we have made as
preparation for the translation.These files are more or less complete with
translation of words and simple phrases from english to norwegian.
The pot files seems to be generated po files from source files (don't know
where the postfix 'pot' comes from). These files are genereated from help
and tips files and contains strings in english we need to translate.

I have tried to set up TM in poedit to generate a TM database from the
project database catalog.
I point the TM database setup to a newly generated catalog called poeDB (I
accidentily skipped the default DB catalog).
I set 'nb' as my language.
I press "Generate database".
I am then asked for a search path and point this to the project database
catalog (as described above).
When I press "proceed" the generation is finished in no time.
A 'nb' catalog is generated underneath the poeDB catalog containing the
files:
strings.db            24kb
translations.db    16kb
words.db            24kb

The sizes seem a low since the project database catalog is about 355kb large
but this may be OK since these files seem to be binary files?
When I open a *.pot file and right click a 'Original string' string I expect
to get some suggestions but only get an empty list. At least I expect to get
some suggestions when I try to translate a string which is almost identical
to a string I have just translated.
The first time I right click a 'Original string' I am asked to 'select
catalog's language. Is this the original string language or the destination
language? I suppose it is the destination language ('nb' which is the only
suggested language to pick).
What am I doing wrong?
Can I not use TM this way?
I suppose I do not want to use the update catalog functionality since I am
not translating source code but pregenerated pot-files and anyway prefere
not to have the text automatically translated?
