I am a bit confused here, isn't menu option File / New Catalog doing this.

I only use poEdit to create my .po files and I also use it to scan the 
source files for new strings to translate.  O.K. I know I use some 
variant of gettext to do this, but I "don't see" that as it is all done 
by poEdit.
