You're absolutely right in this aspect. It is of no use to "normal"
translators. I can imagine that poedit will eventually handle msgfmt
output properly.
We are using deeper sanity checks for the TortoiseSVN translation. For
instance we check for wrong parameters passed to printf or for
inconsistent newline translations.
http://tsvn.e-posta.sk/?l=zh_CN#POzh_CN shows an example for the current
chinese translation (if it doesn't get fixed in the mean time :))

So if I see an app crashing translation bug in line 7963, it would be
much quicker for me to jump there instead of using the search function.

There's also the translation project, which offers a lot of different
consistency checks.

Pspad defaults to Ctrl-G, Delphi uses Alt-G, so I'm pretty used to
xxx-G(oto line number) combinations from my favourite editors. I haven't
seen Ctrl-I yet :)
