I can't do that -- it wouldn't be possible to detect whether the 
string in "translation" field is a new translation or not (the 
translation may and may not be same as original string).

It certainly would -- but somebody would have to implement it. poEdit 
relies on gettext's msgfmt to do the validation and calling external 
program after every change you make in the editor would be overkill.

This is on the TODO list, but nobody contributed the code yet...

Go tell gettext developers. This is msgfmt's error, not poEdit's.
