It refers (misleadingly, I agree) to the feature accessible in the 
menu as "View/Display quotes". Does it fit your understanding of  
"whitespaces highlighting"?

Thanks, I can see it here too :( It happens because wxWindows 2.3.2 
(which poedit-semistatic was linked against) didn't yet support UTF-8 
in language catalogs (next poEdit release will not suffer from this). 
You can fix it by either recompiling poEdit against wxWindows 2.3.3, 
by removing /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/poedit.mo or by 
replacing that file with the one I uploaded to 
http://www.volny.cz/v.slavik/fr.mo
