1) I generally think that software should try to be intuitive to the 
extent possible. Changing "Path" to "Extract text from files in the 
following directories" (or similar) is not a difficult change.

2) I was able to find this in the documentation just now, but only 
because I already knew what I was looking for. If I was totally new I 
would have looked for a link that says "How to create a new catalog". I 
expect "preferences and settings" to be something I can do later. And 
the first tab certainly conveys that impression.

3) Note that the help is not accessible when you have the "new catalog" 
dialog open. This is a modal dialog.

But the *point* is that I didn't know whether "Language" meant *Source* 
or *Destination* language. It's not hard to change "Language" to "Source 
Language" and then the software will be clearer.

Step 1 says to always use the latest version, but when I go to 
"Download" to grab the latest version for Linux it just says to grab 
whatever is already in my distribution.

I have version 1.4.2 from Ubuntu Karmic. Should I try to compile 1.4.3?
