Unable to open source file

Hi,
 I recently downloaded the source code of Pollo. After unzipping the =
pollo-0.4-src.gz file, I tried to open the file in a standard text =
editor. The editor showed some garbled text along with the source code, =
thereby making the code difficult to read.

Can someone please point me the application I need to view the source =
code of Pollo?

Also, is the source code for the cocoon plugin provided with the Pollo =
source. I intend to make my own plugin but I am not able to find docs =
which will help me in this. Are there any documentation for Pollo =
available?

Any help regarding this will be very much appreciated.
