That is what I ended up doing. I find the restriction confusing since what I was trying to do was nothing more than using "variable=value" with value containing the value of another variable - as stated in the docs. My original title is probably misstated since all I was really trying to do is concatenate a value onto the value of a variable and then set that variable to the new value.
