I agree, wow!

I got a headache trying to understand. It would help, for mere mortals, 
to make an example, showing the result at each step. Just a suggestion.

For s/(.)(.);\d*\1(\d*);(\d*(\2\d*))/\3\5\4/ step, is this using nested 
back-references? If yes, I never tried that before, do not see it 
mentioned in the gnu sed manual either way (allowed or not).

I do see it in http://sed.sourceforge.net/sedfaq3.html which I was not 
aware of before.
