Dear all,
I need your sed wisdom to figure out what happens at the end of a cycle. Let's take the following examples:
1) echo a|sed G
2) echo -n a|sed G
3) echo a|sed a\\
4) echo -n a|sed a\\
My current understanding is that sed adds the current line into pattern space (by dropping the newline if any), runs the code and prints the pattern space (adding the dropped newline if any was there initially).
With this understanding I can explain why 1) gives two trailing newlines (one from G, plus the initial one). How is then 2) giving the same output?? I thought only one trailing newline should exist (from G). Similarly, from the last two examples, only 4) makes sense to me, but I admit I might have a misunderstanding also on what 'a\' does without a text after it.
I use GNU sed version 4.2.2.
