Everything except arguments and environment's a file, regardless of whether
it's stored in a filesystem. Standard input is one of the "standard
files", specifically it's file descriptor 0.
The error is what I said: text lines are terminated by newlines. How sed
behaves on malformed input might be a bit squirrelly, but the fix is to
supply correct data. I think I recall GNU sed being changed years ago to
preserve no-trailing-newline for no-newline input, no-newline output as a
special case, to make some uses more convenient, but if you want to handle
raw-binary data generally, switch to perl, which isn't dedicated to
processing text streams.
