No, you're not alone, there are still a few cases where texmacs randomly hangs up.
Altough I never had issues with Cmd-Shit-R in particular, and I find the stability really improved from a few years ago.
I'm on linux and use the latest (git) version.
From my experience, it depends on the particular document, but it's not specific to older documents.
I also use texmacs all day, and have a hang up about every other day, but it's not a big deal thanks to the auto-save feature.
In my case, most hangs-up are in the graphical mode ("Ink here"), but I can also happens when simply moving the cursor in the document, and in some other cases I cannot really identify the
trigger.
