I'll try get to the squashing exercise this weekend.

As far as this being ready: beyond the code review itself, given the splash zone of this change, I think this would benefit from some additional folks testing it out in various workflows and chiming in with their experience. I've tested thoroughly on Markdown at conceallevel=3, but there *may* be edge cases for exotic filetypes with weird conceal strategies that I've missed.

Furthermore, if the maintainers believe this approach has legs, we'll want to also determine whether conceallevel's 1 and 2 should be in scope for this patch, handled as a follow-up, or something else.
