The vim-plug Readme mentions that you need to add the following lines 
into your vimrc file: 
#v+ 
call plug#begin() 
Plug 'plugin-name' 
call plug#end() 
#v- 

Did you do this? Otherwise, I am afraid the :PlugInstall command won't 
be available. 


That resolved the issue, thank you! I didn't realise that the section 
plug#begin() - plug#end() was necessary to even start or load the plugin 
manager.
